Two years after Atlus first teased it, the spin-off for Persona 5 has finally lifted the curtain. The free-to-play mobile game, titled Persona 5: The Phantom X, is now available for Android and iOS devices in China, with a closed beta having taken place in late March. As with the console original, it's being developed by Black Wings Studio and publisher Perfect World Games, with supervision from Sega and Atlus' P-Studio.
Despite being a standalone experience, the game is set in the same universe as Persona 5, with familiar locations such as Yongen-Jaya and Shibuya making an appearance. However, one fan-favorite location, Cafe LeBlanc, is noticeably missing from the map. The game's trailer also revealed that Joker himself will make an appearance.
Back at Madicce headquarters, Konoe approaches EMMA with an idea to catch the Phantom Thieves. The social link expert advises her to use the Jail, a prison where an associate of the Phantom Thieves can be turned into a Monarch and induce a Change of Heart in them, in order to capture the thieves.
The team agrees, and the party travels to Fukuoka to visit Akane, who is kidnapped by Owada, a man who turns out to be a former lobbyist for Masayoshi Shido, the corrupt politician that terrorized Japan a year ago. Upon reaching the prison, Akane deludes herself into believing that the Phantom Thieves are fakes and sends out cognitive copies of herself to fight the players. Once they destroy her doppelganger, she calms down and gets a Change of Heart.
